iOS 10.3.1 includes bug fixes and improves the security of your iPhone or iPad

Apple has released iOS 10.3.1, which is only one week after iOS 10.3 was releasediOS 10.3.1 is considered a minor update as it patches security issues and contains bug fixes. And the iOS 10.3.1 software update release note simply just says: “iOS 10.3.1 includes bug fixes and improves the security of your iPhone or iPad.”

This update comes as a surprise today as Apple did not release any betas of 10.3.1. And Apple did not provide any specific release notes along with the update. But I was able to find out what is included in the update after doing some digging around.

What Is Included In The iOS 10.3.1 Update?

iOS 10.3.1 essentially fixes some of the problems that were caused by iOS 10.3. Soon after iOS 10.3 was released, Apple had to pull it from the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c. Fortunately, iOS 10.3.1 fixes the problem that Apple was seeing with the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c as confirmed by AppleInsiderIt is worth mentioning that the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c were Apple’s last iPhone models to have a 32-bit processor (Apple A6 system on a chip). The iPhone 5s did not have any problems because it has a 64-bit processor.

In my release notes for iOS 10.3, you may have read that Apple was dropping support for 32-bit apps. Going forward, Apple is going to start showing a popup dialog box when a 32-bit app is opened that says: “This app will not work with future versions of iOS. The developer of this app needs to update it to improve its compatibility.” It has been reported that Apple has already started phasing out 32-bit support in the iOS 10.3.2 beta that was released last week.

In Apple’s security notes, it says that iOS 10.3.1 contains a fix for a Wi-Fi flaw that was reported by Gal Beniamini of Google Project Zero. This flaw could have allowed “an attacker within range may be able to execute arbitrary code on the Wi-Fi chip.”

The iOS 10.3 update released last week is considered major as there were a large number of new features built in. The new features that shipped with iOS 10.3 includes the rollout of the Apple File System (APFS) on iOS devices, a new Find My AirPods service, Wi-Fi Calling on iCloud devices with Verizon, the ability for app developers to respond to reviews, a new Podcasts app widget, smoother app animations, a new Apple ID settings menu, a new iCloud section and a Maps app 3D Touch Quick Action feature that shows the weather forecast for your current location.

You can install iOS 10.3.1 by connecting your device to iTunes or downloading it by going to Settings > General > Software Update. The iOS 10.3.1 update is available for the following devices: iPhone 5 and later, iPad 4th generation and later and iPod touch 6th generation and later. The download size of iOS 10.3.1 is under 30MB so it does not require too much storage space to install the update.
